9:00pm: Reid continued to have a fairly agitated day but did make some progress on the vent. They have retracted his breaths per minute down to 25, his O2 to 50, his volume to 15 and his PEEP (pressure) to 6. They are really trying to wean him off the morphine as his pain should have subsided by now, but they are having a little difficulty with it. Since Reid isn't as "snowed" as he used to be, they are giving Ativan to take some of the edge off. He barely slept last night and much of the morning... it is as if he doesn't want to miss anyone talking or coming to visit. The nurse mentioned today that even if she tip-toed into the room, Reid would open his eyes and look in the direction of her walking in the room. The Ativan lets him relax and calm down and allows him to fall asleep.
Dr. Moore is back in tomorrow and we are anxious to see what the game plan is. His hernias have not been an issue over the past 4 or 5 days, so I don't think there is any pressing need for him to have surgery. They want to make sure that his respiratory issues can stabilize before moving forward, but I am going to be adamant that I am not leaving Egleston until they have done the surgery. I do not want him to be transported back to Cobb only to start having hernia issues all over again and then need to be transported back. In addition, the sooner that he can have the surgery, the sooner he can come off the ventilator... I don't want to be in a holding pattern with him on the vent just waiting for the time when the hernias become difficult to reduce.
10:30am: I was just reading through the blog this morning and I realized that I never posted yesterday that they were able to successfully get Reid off of the Nitric Oxide. They pulled it at 10:30am yesterday and with a little bump in O2 support, he was able to handle it.
9:45am: Reid had a very grumpy night last night and didn't sleep all that much. I think that with the low amounts of morphine and the fact that his body is getting used to it, he is becoming very irritable as he knows what is going on. When I called in this morning, his oxygen was at 50% and they were talking about starting some small feeds to get his gut working again. I think he is a hungry little man.
