11:00pm: is tonight our night? So far, this is the news we have been waiting to hear. Every night, we call right before bed and cross our fingers that things are going well. Lisa, our nurse tonight, said that she had been waiting for us to call as she had good news for us. Right now, his O2 is at 45% and sat'ing at 97. She is ready to bump him down to 40%, but she was cautious and wanted to take things slow. He has had quite a lot of urine tonight, which can also help with the stress that body fluids can put on the lungs. So, a breath of fresh air tonight, but don't want to get over excited as we know what can happen. But, good news is good news and we will take everything we can get right now.
6:30pm: down to 65% O2 and sat'ing 95. They have made a change on his feedings in another attempt to keep him dry: 6cc milk fortified to 24 calorie and starting the hyperal again. They want to ensure that he is getting the most calories possible for him to continue to grow, while trying to restrict the amour of fluids that he is getting. During rounds today, he had had a group of about 6 that was composed of doctors, pharmacists, nutritionists, etc. And they feel like they have formulated the best nutrition possible for him.
On a lighter note, his chin and neck weigh about a pound and his hands look like those of a fat kid. I will post pictures later tonight when I am home. :). Hopefully we can get some of these fluids off of him soon so that he starts looking like our baby again.
2:30pm: Reid is on 75% oxygen and they ended up giving him a catheter to help relieve some of the excess fluids. With him being very sedated and paralyzed, his urine output is less than stellar. We are about to head into the hospital soon...
9:45am: Reid had an up and down night: O2 fluctuated from the 50s to the 80s and was currently on 80% when Kristen called. He had recently been turned onto his back and caused his levels to go slightly up. On a different front, it looks like Reid packed on some serious weight over the past few days. The nurses have attributed it to the fact that the nurcuron causes fluid retention and with him on nearly full feeds and being paralyzed (little caloric burn). They have dropped his feeds down to 11cc per hour to help compensate against the fact that he is retaining the fluids.
